Logan Warmoth Scouting Report

Logan Warmoth, SS

Ht: 6’0” Wt: 190

MLB Draft: 1st round, 22nd overall

Tools:
Hit: Warmoth has excellent plate discipline and has the ability to spray the ball to all fields. So far in the Northwest League he has drawn just two walks in 55 at-bats, but has also only struck out 10 times. His short, compact swing doesn’t have a lot of swing-and-miss in it. Warmoth controls the strike zone and has the quick twitch muscles that will be able to catch up to mid-to-upper 90s fastballs as he progresses through the minors. Grade: 50/55

Power: Warmoth saw an improvement in power during his Sophomore season at the University of North Carolina, but his swing is more suited for gap power rather than launching home runs. He has sacrificed some of his hit ability in recent years to try and hit for more power, but power is not where his strengths lie. Grade: 40/45

Speed: I had Warmoth at 4.3 seconds both times going from home to first, which is solid, but not amazing for a right-handed batter. While his speed will never be considered a plus tool, his instincts on the basepaths will help him swipe a few bags and take the extra base when needed. Grade 55

Defense: Warmoth possesses the range, instincts, and hands to be a solid shortstop, but never a great one. Due to a relatively weak throwing arm, second base may be a more suitable position in the long term. Warmoth does field through the ball nicely and have a quick release which makes up for his lack of arm strength on slow rollers or balls to his left, but he will need to add muscle if he ever wants to hose guys from the hole.      Grade: 50/55

Overall: 50/55

MLB Comparison:  Zack Cozart
